Summer Camp: Musical Theater Camp for Teens: Godspell (Rising Grades 7-12)

Summer Camp: Musical Theater Camp for Teens: Godspell (Rising Grades 7-12)

For rising 7th-12th graders, Musical Theater Camp for Teens: Godspell offers a 2-week exploration of the art of musical theater while promoting confidence and instilling the spirit of collaboration in aspiring young performers. Directed by Debby Jenkins, an accomplished veteran musical theater educator with expertise in music direction, campers will build skills in musicality, vocal performance, acting, movement, and stage etiquette as they are led through the beginning-to-end process of putting on a musical: casting, table reads/table work, learning music, blocking and staging, choreography, rehearsing songs and scenes, adding technical elements (costumes, props, wigs, lights, sound, set), and finally, performing in front of an audience. Additionally, campers will participate in fun, hands-on musical theater-themed enrichment activities to practice and reinforce the skills they will be building throughout the 2-week rehearsal process. The camp will culminate in 2 performances of Godspell at the Constellation Playhouse.

Summer Camp: Theater Camp for Littles: The Stinky Cheese Man (Rising Grades 1-3)

For rising 1st-3rd graders, Theater Camp for Littles: The Stinky Cheese Man offers full-day, hands-on activities that encourage and promote the exploration and creation of theater arts in a fun, engaging camp environment. With a focus on teamwork and fostering imagination, campers will be guided through the fundamental beginning-to-end process of putting on a play inspired by The Stinky Cheese Man, a hilarious twist on classic fairy tales. Skill-building theater exercises, along with Stinky Cheese Man-themed improvisation games and activities, will focus on acting, voice, world building, character creation, storytelling, movement, and stage etiquette. Campers will gain self-confidence, respect for others, and a greater ability to express themselves both physically and vocally, all while making new friends along the way. The week culminates in an afternoon showcase at Constellation Playhouse!

Summer Camp: Broadway Bootcamp (Session 2) (Rising Grades 4-7)

Broadway Bootcamp is BACK! For aspiring triple-threats, Broadway Bootcamp for Kids for rising 4th – 7th graders allows young performers to experience a snapshot of the professional rehearsal process. Led by a team of musical theater professionals, campers will work on material from fun, contemporary Broadway shows. The week of intensive training in acting, singing, and dancing will help budding musical theater artists develop and sharpen skills, gain confidence, and make friends along the way! Broadway Bootcamp for Kids will culminate in an afternoon showcase at the John Waldron Arts Center that highlights the ensemble and lets soloists shine!

Summer Camp: Spontaneous Combustion: Improv Ignited (Rising Grades 4-7)

For rising 4th-7th graders, Spontaneous Combustion: Improv Ignited provides the perfect playground for the creative kid with an active imagination and undeniable funny bone, as well as the more introverted kid who just needs the right environment to be inspired to come out of their shell. This immersive and hands-on comedy camp will give budding comedians the opportunity to build improvisational skills and performance technique in a safe, fun, and collaborative environment. Improv is a dynamic and enlightening art form that will help campers gain confidence; foster creativity; develop storytelling ability; enhance listening, communication, and collaboration skills; and build resilience–all while having a blast The camp will culminate in a live showcase at the Constellation Studios, highlighting both the improv troupe and individual performers.

Acting Ensemble for Kids: Charlotte’s Web (Grades 5-6)

Constellation’s Acting Ensemble for Kids: Charlotte’s Web (Grades 5-6) is a fast-paced and fun exploration of acting that will use an imaginative theatrical version of E.B. White’s beloved and timeless classic, Charlotte’s Web, to focus on building an ensemble. Students will also learn and build upon the basics of theatrical staging and theater etiquette while developing the building blocks of acting technique — including voice and speech, creative movement, and exploration of world and character — all while having a TERRIFIC time as they work towards a final showcase! Students will emerge from the class more articulate, confident, and collaborative performers. This class is perfect for beginners, as well as acting students with some experience.

Improv for Adults: Beyond Beginner (Ages 18+)

Constellation’s Improv for Adults: Beyond Beginner is a fast-paced, highly interactive workshop-style class that reinforces and builds upon improvisational skills and performance techniques. This class will focus on short-form improv, will offer an exploration of long-form improv, and is open to adults with previous improv experience (class, workshop, troupe, etc) who have mastered the fundamentals. Improv is a magical and collaborative art form that is not only fantastically fun, it boosts creativity, develops storytelling ability, enhances listening and communication skills, and builds confidence and resilience. Students will practice their skills in a safe, supportive, “Yes, and” learning environment.

Prerequisites: Previous improv experience/solid improv foundation (classes, troupe, etc.)

Theater Playground for Littles: Aesop’s Fables (Grades K-2)

Theater Playground: Aesop’s Fables is an introduction to theater arts for Littles (grades K-2nd) and will focus on the fundamentals of storytelling using fun, dramatized versions Aesop’s Fables like The Ant and the Grasshopper, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, and The Tortoise and the Hare. Through imaginative play, students will build foundational theater skills in improvisation, communication, voice, movement, and character creation. Guided enrichment activities will spark creative thinking, examine point of view, promote active listening, and encourage self-expression.

Minecraft Moviemaking for Kids (Grades 3-4)

Lights, Camera, Minecraft! Constellation’s Minecraft Moviemaking for Kids (grades 3-4) will immerse students in the creative world of filmmaking, inspired by the popular game and culminating in their own cinematic masterpiece! In addition to gaining practical filmmaking experience in front of and behind the camera, students will collaborate to craft compelling characters and a beginning-to-end narrative using the ultra kid-friendly Minecraft universe as a backdrop. Story development and group discussions will promote narrative fluency, boost creativity, and promote imaginative thinking. Additionally, students will design and build sets within the Minecraft environment, honing their spatial reasoning and encouraging innovative solutions to creative challenges, resulting in increased confidence and self-expression.

Playwriting for Adults: The 10-Minute Play (Ages 18+)

Playwriting for Adults: The 10-Minute Play (Ages 18+)

Constellation’s Playwriting for Adults: The 10-Minute Play is an 8-week course where budding playwrights will learn or build upon the fundamentals of playwriting: character development, dramatic tension, and narrative structure. Students will explore these fundamentals by writing their own 10-minute plays. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to: generate ideas through a variety of in-class writing exercises, develop strategies for transforming their writing exercises into short plays, hear their work read aloud by their peers, receive feedback on their pieces in a safe and supportive environment, experience and discuss short plays written by renowned playwrights, and learn how to submit their short plays to festivals. This class is appropriate for both beginners and students with previous writing experience. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of dramatic writing while more experienced writers will have the opportunity to practice and master these techniques.

Broadway Kids: Beauty & the Beast In Concert (Grades 5-8)

Broadway Kids: Beauty & the Beast In Concert (Grades 5-8)

Be our guest for Broadway Kids: Beauty and the Beast In Concert (grades 5-8)! In this 10-week performance class, students will learn and workshop scenes and songs from Beauty and the Beast, one of the most treasured and enchanting musicals of all time. Under the direction of a seasoned, professional teaching artist and musical director, Debby Jenkins, students will develop the building of blocks of stage etiquette, musicianship, and performance that will culminate in a concert version that will highlight storytelling as well as solo and ensemble singing in fun, dynamic musical numbers like “Belle,” “Gaston,” “Be Our Guest,” “Human Again,” and the Academy Award-winning “Beauty and the Beast.”

The Broadway Ensemble for Adults (Ages 18+)

The Broadway Ensemble for Adults (Ages 18+)

Come explore the ensemble numbers of Broadway in this 10-week performance class for adults! In Constellation’sThe Broadway Ensemble, students will learn and workshop ensemble songs from classic and contemporary Broadway musicals under the direction of a seasoned, professional coach/teaching artist and musical director. In addition to community-building and making new friends along the way, students will develop skills in stage etiquette, stage presence, musicianship, musicality, and vocal technique as they collaborate to bring musical numbers to life with exciting harmonies and light staging/choreography. The class will culminate in a final performance that showcases the ensemble with ample opportunities for soloists to shine. The Broadway Ensemble is a prerequisite to join Constellation Singers, Constellations Stage & Screen’s in-house musical theater performance group.

Prerequisite: Some singing experience preferred (voice lessons; classes; school/church/community choirs; talent shows; school/community stage productions/concerts/showcases, etc.)

Acting Ensemble for Littles: Where the Wild Things Are (Grades K-2)

Acting Ensemble for Littles: Where the Wild Things Are is a theater arts class for young, budding performers that builds upon their interest in acting, movement, and self-expression—all while having fun! Designed especially for Littles (grades K-2nd), this class will use a dramatized version of Where the Wild Things Are to create characters and explore fantastical worlds. Students will become familiar with the basics of script analysis, stage directions, and storytelling in an interactive and dynamic learning environment. The class will also implement confidence-building theater games and improvisation activities to spark creative thinking for a lifelong love of performing. Students will get to show off their new skills with a final showcase on November 22.

Musical Theater Playground for Littles: Lions & Ogres & Beasts (Grades K-2)

Musical Theater Playground: Lions & Ogres & Beasts is an introduction to musical theater arts for Littles (grades K-2nd) that explores three blockbuster Broadway musicals inspired by blockbuster animated movies: The Lion King, Shrek, and Beauty and the Beast. Students will practice skills in acting, vocal expression, and movement–all while playing with showstopping music and larger-than-life characters. This fun and interactive learning environment will also implement confidence-building theater games and improvisation activities to spark creative thinking, promote active listening, and encourage self-expression.

Broadway Kids Junior: The Sound of Music In Concert (Grades 3-4)

Constellation’s Broadway Kids Junior: The Sound of Music In Concert (grades 3-4) is a 7-week performance class that gives budding young performers the opportunity to learn and workshop ensemble songs from Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic and beloved The Sound of Music. Under the direction of a seasoned, professional teaching artist, students will develop the building blocks of stage etiquette, musicianship, musicality, and performance as they bring to life musical numbers like “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and “So Long, Farewell” in an enriching and supportive musical theater environment. The class will culminate in a short concert on December 17. (Students should be comfortable singing in front of others.)

Intro to Stage Combat for Adults (Ages 18+)

In Constellation’s Intro to Stage Combat for Adults, students will gain a fundamental understanding of stage combat principles, prioritizing safety and illusion as they are introduced to the foundational techniques for unarmed combat with a focus on developing the ability to perform basic choreographed fight sequences. Unarmed combat techniques will include punches, kicks, slaps, blocks, falls, rolls and grappling. Additionally, students will explore how acting plays a part in “selling” the illusion of impact through realistic reactions, breathing, sounds, and facial expressions. The class will highlight the crucial balance between artistic expression and rigorous safety protocols.
