2019 ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE PERFORMING ARTS IN BLOOMINGTON

In the spring of 2019, a group of graduate students from the IU O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs conducted a study on behalf of Cardinal Stage detailing the economic impact of the performing arts in downtown Bloomington.

According to the study, three organizations (Cardinal Stage, Buskirk-Chumley Theater, and the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center) account for $4.6 million in economic impact annually.

The O’Neill group also found that the performing arts sector accounts for over $500,000 in induced economic impact annually. For every ticket sold to a performing arts event, audiences spend $32.19 on average on other goods and services in Bloomington, including food and beverages, clothing, etc.

Additional results from the group’s survey of performing arts patrons and stakeholders found that most of those surveyed felt that the performing arts added significant value to the Bloomington community and believe the performing arts should receive public funding. The survey also found that local performing arts opportunities help retain economic activity in the community, with 60% of those surveyed saying they would travel to another city to attend a performance if it wasn’t an available option in Monroe County.
